However, it turns out that no article was ever commissioned by the for New York Times. The NYT also says it has no knowledge of any discussions about research into travel communities taking place between it and any contributor.

Bwahahaha, MadeIndra???

Yes, the obese, beardy weirdy, ponytailed old man with the "all western women have fishy vaginas" line of patter. He brought down the Thorn Tree by pretending to be a New York Times journalist. It's actually quite funny.

Yah it was pretty bad. And the only new information in it was that the NWT says they don't know anything about MadIndra. Although that is kind of funny.

I thought someone from TTYC would have sent an anonymous e-mail to one of the reporters covering the story with MadIndra's real name and website by now, as well as some details of his own posting history/content on there (white women with fishy smelling snatches).

Fucking MadeIndra......what a complete cunt.

Someone who talks about fishy western vaginas really isn't in a position to moan about the word fuck.

Come to think of it, neither is the BBC as I've seen Malcolm Tucker in action in The Thick of It.

I like how the BBC points out that "many" of the comments on that "Welcome back" thread are positive.

Well, no. 2 or 3 posters are positive; the rest, not so much. And really, if battybilly/mickeyfinn are in your court, and just about no one else, isn't that indicative that you're on the wrong side?

So mickey is trying to claim responsibility too? Based on one screen shot of a post that_prick made several years ago, taken out of context, that he couldn't get them to act on for years? Or he's just trying to get a day in the sun now, on the coattails of the whole thing?

Of course this so called explanation doesn't add up at all.

Closing down a popular forum right before Christmas and New Year without warning because they noticed people actually say 'fuck' and argue on internet forums? That they couldn't think of any other user friendly solution to deal with that except closing it down without notice?

Give me a fucking break.

Not to mention the moderators, or another one higher up that make the call, decided to heavily censor most feedback and criticism that weren't that 'positive' with that delayed moderating crap, and just let a few through so to fake the impression of a balanced public view.

So Mickey wasn't lying about that then?

I saw it at the time they had their exchange which was many years ago, and although I don't remember the specifics very well, yeah, t_p (obviously scarcastically) said what mickey claimed he said. I think I remember that within the same thread he pointed out that he was very obviously being scarcastic. The whole thread might even have been along the lines of "you can say anything on the internet; it's not a threat unless it's actually plausible - since I'm not in the same country as you, and don't know who you are, I could write a post that I was going to ____________ and it would be obvious that it wasn't an actual threat".

If, in fact, mickey did send it to the attention of LP a bunch of times and they didn't act on it, but they did act on MadeIndra pointing out that people use swear words, I have to think his case is piss weak.

BBC officials closed the platform on the basis of an email from someone claiming to be writing for the NYT (a proclamation which turned out to be false), but then did so armed with the knowledge that large swathes of the forum were carrying content way beyond chatting about, for example, the best places to visit in Indonesia

Nonetheless, I suspect very few of us would find it funny if we were on the receiving end and I think it's bizarre and creepy that those who saw it then decided to pretend that it hadn't been said at all, rather than pointing out that it was meant to be a 'joke'.

I agree with you - I found it distasteful and out of line. But I wasn't aware anyone who saw it had been claiming it hadn't been said at all. Perhaps they would claim that "he didn't threaten your son" meant "he didn't ACTUALLY threaten your son".

Course they weren't, but the BBC 'official' said some were. "It’s understandable and inevitable that there are vocal members of the community who do not agree with the changes we’ve made. However, there are also plenty of positive comments on that thread, and other messages that our community team have received. We’ve actively used that feedback to influence the prioritisation of functionality and content to bring back."

If they re-introduce YC, it'll probably be pre-moderated and with heavy restrictions on content and language. In other words, not equivalent. Who'd want to go back?

I miss the old place, though. There's stuff I'd have posted there that I don't feel able to post here - and not for privacy reasons. Maybe that'll change as I bed in.

I emailed that Kevin bloke with all the madeindra information when he wrote about it initially, including all the allegations of him being a dodgy bloke with an interest in under age girls. Kevin published it initially and then withdrew it. All I did was link to other sites making allegations *innocent face*.

I'm done with lp, this place is s great replacement. I only wish someone would go over to the travel branch and give me a suggestion of where to stay in Jerusalem.

it's depressing. how can a smug twat like that win? i refuse to believe it was him. it would give him too much credit.

i like it here, but there are two things missing:
i'd like to see more of a blurb under the titles to posts . i liked the tt for that. you could read the main part of the story before you decided to open the thread or not. i liked to survey the first page to see what was going on. it's not so easy here.

i don't know if it's because of the above that things move a little slower or if that's why people seem all spread out. people used to be able to banter back and forth on a thread like a live conversation. i'd like that to happen here. and, i miss spoo joining in.

whine over. ( i still have whine credits because i missed a whole month.)

I don't post on as many threads here at all. Again, because the titles alone don't inspire me to join in. On proboards, hovering over the titles gives you the first few lines of a post, which is a compromise, i suppose.

Otherwise, this board functions well, and has some good features. I just miss scanning the first para of every OP.
